Paint Job Pg 3

Now comes the fenders and chain guards, they were painted gold and the flaked and cleared. After that they were dried and wet sanded before the candy was applied. Then they were clear coated again and the next day they were wet sanded one more time before the final coat of clear was applied (Fig. 7). Once that was finished the real fun began. The tank, battery box and electronics plate were painted blue and then clear coated (Fig. 8). The next step was to let them dry and then wet sand them down before the flames were masked out. Once I was happy with the flame layout the rest of the tank and parts were masked off. Then gold was sprayed and then the flake was laid down. Once that was dry the flames were sanded down with 320 grit paper and the candy maroon was airbrushed on (Fig 9). Then the real trouble began. Either I left the tape on too long or not long enough, I do not know which, but when the tape was pulled off the paint that was over top of the tape just kind of peeled back and did not come off and that that did curled up and landed on the paint. Needless to say it was not a good time. The next day I was able to flake off the remaining paint that curled up and get it back to where it was supposed to be. Now that everything had dried it was time to wet sand again and then clear coat the flames. After that coat dried it was wet sanded again and then it was time to try a new tool to pin stripe the flames on the tank and other parts.
